William Adams - The Law Is An Ass

Judge Williams, you are the living embodiment of the phrase, "if that is the law, then the law is an ass."

To quote directly from The Dallas Morning News Points Section, Sunday, November 6, 2011 edition:

You said, "in my mind, I haven't done anything wrong other than discipline my child after she was caught stealing.  And I did lose my temper, but I've since apologized."

This is the very thing that is wrong with the election of judges in Texas rather than appointment/confirmation.  You can be fairly certain that you will be re-elected because you are the incumbent for the next election.

Let's take a look at your statement.

One, you lost your temper but you have since apologized.  How many apologetic parents have you stripped of their rights or even had sent to jail or prison despite their professed contrition for having lost their tempers before or while "disciplining" their children  You sir, are a hypocrite.

Next, let's discuss discipline, a verb (in this case) which covers many sins.  Discipline should be appropriate to both the nature and degree of the offense.  Beating your child, as shown in the video, after or during the time you have lost your temper, is not discipline.  It is breaking the law.  Administering a beating in anger, such as you did, would be a crime had your child been of legal age.  Try this in a place outside your home and with someone who is by legal definition no longer a minor, and you would be guilty of a multitude of legal offenses.  As it is, you still committed what meets the legal definition of a criminal act, but which is shamefully excused by the very backward law in the State of Texas.

And then you say "your child."  She's more than just your child. She is an adolescent at an age where her crime of stealing was very serious.  But, and more important, she is also of an age when talking rather than beating would be a better approach.  The fact that you chose to beat her, says more to me about your inability to converse convincingly on the subject of such criminal acts.  For that reason alone you don't deserve to hold the office you do wherein you stand in judgement of  parents who publicly admit their contrition for having lost their tempers to the point that what should be appropriate discipline becomes criminal.

It would be a further crime if the citizens in Aransas County re-elect you at any point.  It would be a proper, and self-imposed discipline on your own part, to resign.
