This is the first episode in the true story of the arrival, formal introductions, activities and idiosyncrasies of the former "Porch Cat" now named Eponymous.
Pictures of Eponymous (who may rightly be described as a sleep enthusiast) are below. Read the first installment of Eponymous' life adventures right after the pictures.
The past life, current events, and future adventures of Eponymous (aka Porch Cat during his life in the 'hood) must begin with a look backwards at the circumstances which brought him into our lives and home.
To fully understand the entry of "E" as I shall refer to him going forward, one must go some 23 years into the past and know the story of yet another cat that, without expectation or planning entered our lives.
My partner and I had just purchased our first house in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. House is a kindly description. It was, from the outside, a beautiful brick Gingerbread Victorian style cottage built in 1907. Inside, it would have made the house in the movie "The Money Pit" look like the Park Plaza in Manhattan. But, it was all that we could afford and, of course being young and naive, we had the hopes, dreams, knowledge and ability to transform it into something that would reflect what must have been its beauty and charm when first built.
Naive as we were, we did not realize that this transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, would require us to purchase and install on our own, nearly every item to be found in the stock at the nearest Home Depot. But, we were undeterred in our efforts.
One day, on a lark, we decided to visit the Home Show at Dallas Market Center to see if there were other ideas (please read less expensive) that we might use during our efforts. There were many of these ideas, some of which we copied shamelessly. More important, we became the sole object of one young, tortoise shell coated cat, most egregiously named Rachel, at the SPCA pet adoption booth. We were enamored with her from the start, because she simply would not shut up every time we looked in her direction as we repeatedly passed her undignified display cage.
We fell in love with her from the start the moment we picked her up and she demonstrated the behavior which immediately caused us to change her name to "Baby Kitty." She insisted on being held up on our chest, head pressed to our necks, and front paws wrapped around our neck. She became our friend and boarder that same day.
She remained our pet and friend for 22 years. In all those years she was a constant bed companion during the winter when the floors were cold, often mewing in our faces quietly as we slept, to awaken us to the fact that she wanted under the covers with us. And, as if through some special type of knowledge, she recognized when we were ill in bed or napping on the sofa because we were depressed and so, despite the hour, she would seek us out to join us and thereby provide comfort and distraction from that which would otherwise have filled our thoughts with sickness or depression.
Unfortunately, Baby Kitty went to peace in my arms, after a short but devastating bought of cancer, on November 11, 2011.
Something very remarkable happened though during Baby Kitty's last few weeks of life. That can only be described as strange and wonderful in its unfolding while Baby Kitty continued to decline. "E" had arrived with a need and to fill a need.
In the next installment of "The Story of E" the needs will be explained as they unfolded, beyond anything we could have wished or wanted.
